Our verdict

The best-supported option here — 2-year warranty, five years of security updates and 3 hours of free video history — but the most expensive and only HD resolution.

Best for: Google Home households who want some video history without paying monthly.

Battery-powered with a built-in rechargeable battery, or wired to existing doorbell wires (8–24 V AC, 10 VA) so your existing chime rings. Even when wired, Google says the battery must be charged indoors when temperatures fall below 0 °C. On battery only, your existing chime will not ring; alerts go to your phone and compatible Google speakers. Needs the Google Home app, a Google Account and at least 2 Mbps upload speed. If Wi-Fi drops, it stores up to one hour of recorded events locally.
