The 60-second answer
- Decide how you will power it. Battery models fit almost any door with no wiring. Wiring one to your existing doorbell transformer keeps it charged and lets your current chime ring.
- Add up the yearly cost, not just the price. Most brands show live video for free but charge to keep recordings.
- Check your Wi-Fi at the door. Several popular models only use 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, and 2K video needs a decent upload speed.
- Point it at your own property. If it records the street or a neighbour’s home, UK data protection rules apply to you.
Battery or wired?
All four doorbells we compare can run on a battery, so you can fit them without an electrician. Each can also be wired to an existing doorbell transformer — typically 8–24 V AC — which keeps the battery topped up and lets your existing chime ring.
- On battery only, your old chime goes silent. Alerts come to your phone, and to a plug-in chime or smart speaker if you add one.
- Wired, the battery still matters: Google says the Nest Doorbell’s battery must be charged indoors when it drops below 0 °C, and eufy says the E340 needs its battery fitted even in wired mode (which keeps it working in a power cut).
- Removable packs (Ring Battery Video Doorbell 2K Plus, eufy E340) let you swap in a charged battery instead of taking the doorbell off the wall.

Wi-Fi and internet
- The Ring Battery Video Doorbell 2K and the eufy E340 use 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only. The Nest Doorbell works on 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz.
- Ring recommends at least 10 Mbps upload for its 2K doorbells; Google asks for at least 2 Mbps. Test your Wi-Fi speed standing at the front door before you buy — a weak signal there is the most common reason for slow alerts.
Privacy: filming beyond your boundary
The ICO says that if a home camera or video doorbell captures images beyond your property — the street, a shared path, a neighbour’s garden — data protection law applies to that footage. In practice:
- Angle the doorbell and use privacy zones to cover only your own property where you can.
- Have a clear reason for recording, keep footage secure and delete it regularly.
- Let people know recording is happening (a sign helps), and be ready to give someone a copy of footage they appear in if they ask.
Read the ICO’s guidance on home CCTV before you install.
Renting?
Battery doorbells need no wiring, but you will usually still need to drill holes for the mounting plate. Ask your landlord in writing first, keep the original doorbell, and remove the device from your account when you move out.
