The short answer
Smart radiator valves can reduce wasted heat in rooms you don’t use all the time, such as spare bedrooms or a home office used on weekdays only. In small homes where every room is used, the benefit is smaller.
How they work
A smart radiator valve (also called a smart TRV) replaces the head of a standard thermostatic radiator valve. It opens and closes the valve on a schedule or when it detects an open window.
Do they fit my radiators?
Many UK radiator valves use a common M30 × 1.5 thread, and most smart valves include adapters for other common types. Check the product’s fitting guide before buying.
Valves and thermostats together
Valves control how much heat each room gets, but the boiler still needs to be told when to fire. Some systems link the two, so a cold room can call for heat. If yours don’t, the main thermostat still decides when the boiler runs.
When they are worth it
- Rooms used at different times of day.
- Larger homes with several rarely used rooms.
- Homes where one thermostat sits in a room that is warmer or cooler than the rest.
